In this Easter Chick Zen Doodle Art Project, students draw a cheerful, fluffy baby chick with spring flowers, design their own decorative zen doodle border, and finish with a colorful watercolor background using an oil pastel resist technique.

It is a mixed media spring art lesson for elementary art classrooms, homeschool art, spring units, sub plans and seasonal activities. Students explore pattern, line, texture and watercolor blending, and the mix of structured drawing and open pattern design builds confidence while letting each artwork be their own.

HOW TO USE IT

Introduce the project with the example artwork, guide students through the step-by-step drawing pages, and demonstrate the mixed media techniques while students create their own zen doodle designs. In the background, the oil pastel repels the watercolor paint to create bright, layered effects.

Along the way, students learn how artists use line, shape, pattern, color and texture to build an interesting composition, and how multiple materials can work together in one artwork. Finished pieces make a cheerful seasonal bulletin board display.
