Plan a year of art for mixed ages

Teaching more than one age? Pick the age groups in your family and a month. Everyone works on the same theme at their own level, so you can set up once and make art together.

Want a week-by-week plan with videos, tips and a supply list? Try the Art Lesson Planner and choose “Homeschooler” and “Mixed ages”.

Homeschool art questions

How do I teach art to kids of different ages at the same time?

Pick one theme or artist for everyone, then give each child a lesson that fits their age. Little ones focus on shapes, colour and fine motor skills, and older kids add detail, shading and more planning. The year planner above pairs lessons this way for every month.

How often should we do art in our homeschool?

A rhythm you can keep beats a big plan you drop. One art lesson a week plus a few minutes of daily sketchbook time builds real skill over a year. The Drawing Prompt of the Day makes the daily part easy.

What supplies do we need to start?

Pencils, an eraser, a black marker, crayons or oil pastels, washable markers, watercolour paint and a brush, glue, scissors and good paper will cover most lessons. Each lesson lists its own materials.

I’m not an artist. Can I still teach art at home?

Yes. My lessons are written for parents and teachers who don’t feel like art experts, with step-by-step visuals and videos, so you can learn right alongside your kids.

What are the Elements of Art, and why start there?

Line, shape, form, colour, value, texture and space are the building blocks of every artwork. Learning them gives kids the words and skills to make and talk about art, which is why my grade units are built around them.
