This Rudolph reindeer art project is a festive Christmas lesson for elementary and middle school students. Students follow a guided step-by-step drawing tutorial to sketch Rudolph and his glowing red nose, then use oil pastel color blending and painting to add rich texture.

It is a low-prep holiday art lesson that you can adjust for different skill levels, and the finished reindeer make a bright winter bulletin board display before winter break.

HOW TO USE IT

Read the lesson plan and gather the materials ahead of time: pencil, eraser, black felt or fine liner, card stock or watercolor paper, red and green paint (any kind watered down, such as tempera, acrylic or watercolor) and oil pastels, plus a step-by-step handout and rubric for each student. You may want to make a sample yourself first.

Show the finished example in color before the lesson as your hook. Then project the step-by-step pages on a digital projector or document camera for students to follow, or use them as your own guide while you demonstrate. Every step has both a picture and a written description.
