This Christmas Tree Art Project is a holiday art lesson for elementary and middle school students. Students practice oil pastel blending and painting techniques while creating a Christmas tree with a strong focal point.
Students follow a guided drawing tutorial to outline their tree, then add color blending and textural painting to finish the piece. It is a low-prep lesson for the weeks before winter break, it reinforces the Elements of Art, and the finished trees make a cheerful bulletin board display.
WHAT'S INCLUDED (NON-EDITABLE)
- Lesson plan (2 pages) with materials, learning objectives and teacher guidance
- Grading rubric for quick assessment
- Step-by-step drawing handout to help students draw their Christmas tree
- Art piece demonstration step-by-step with visuals and instructions (23 slides)
- Example of a completed Christmas tree art piece for display and inspiration
HOW TO USE IT
Look over the lesson plan and gather your materials in advance: pencil, eraser, black felt or fine liner, step-by-step draw handouts (30 copies), art rubrics (30 copies), card stock or watercolor paper, red paint (any kind, watered down) and oil pastels. Photocopy the student handouts, and consider making a sample yourself so you are ready to help students.
Print the poster sample in color and show it as your hook. Then project the step-by-step pages, show them under a document camera, or use them as your guide while you demonstrate. Every step has both a visual and a text description.
