Directed Drawing for Kids

Directed drawing is one of my favorite ways to build confidence. Kids follow simple steps, then add their own colors, backgrounds and silly details, so every drawing ends up different. Here are my directed drawing lessons for every season, plus free ideas from the blog.

Questions teachers and parents ask me

What is directed drawing?

It’s a guided drawing where the teacher shows one step at a time and kids copy each step, then finish the picture their own way with color and details.

Does directed drawing stop kids from being creative?

Not when you leave room for choice. The steps build the basic shape, and the background, colors, patterns and extra details are all theirs.

What age is directed drawing good for?

It works from kindergarten up. Younger kids get big, simple shapes; older kids can handle more steps, shading and detail.

What supplies do I need?

Paper, a pencil and an eraser to start. Fine-tip markers, crayons, oil pastels or colored pencils are great for finishing.
