Self-Portrait Art Lessons for Kids
Self-portraits are such a sweet way to get to know your students, and for kids to see themselves as artists. These portrait lessons go from simple all-about-me pages for little ones to Picasso-style cubist faces for older kids.

Questions teachers and parents ask me
When should kids draw self-portraits?
Back to school is a favorite, and doing another one at the end of the year shows kids how much they’ve grown.
How do I help kids draw faces?
Start with simple face proportions: eyes halfway down the head, then the nose and mouth below. A mirror helps a lot.
What if a child says they can’t draw themselves?
Remind them a portrait doesn’t need to look like a photo. Their colors, patterns and choices tell us who they are.
What ages are these for?
There are portrait lessons from kindergarten through middle school. Each one lists its grade range.
