This is a fun project, but I didn't have my classroom management set up for project based learning and group learning as well as I had hoped. It was my first year teaching and I wanted to try out project-based learning. This activity consists of researching, drawing, and leading questions regarding natural resources. But it does lack in explanation, and I didn't have this prepared ahead of time. So between lack of preparation on my part and lack of group work procedures, my 7th graders didn't get nearly as much learning as I had hoped from this project.

Really liked some of these activities, but did find some to be repetitive. I actually pulled separate activities out and used them as bell ringers to introduce and review concepts rather than use as a unit project! Overall still very helpful :)

My students LOVED this project! It took a few days to complete but they looked forward to coming and doing their research. I had all of my students select a different state and do research on a state they chose using their Chromebooks.

Learn about Natural Resources, Renewable Resources, and Non-Renewable Resources with science, writing, drawing, problem-solving, research with technology and create a diorama of the harvesting of a natural resource from a student's own home state or province.

Discover: Resources

Congratulations! You’ve been selected for a scientific expedition to discover natural resources, renewable resources, and non-renewable resources.

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about:

  • natural resources
  • renewable resources
  • non-renewable resources
  • conservation

Through this challenge, you will learn through research online and in books about resources in your own state or province. It is important to understand the natural resources in your own community. After collecting your research, you will present what you have learned through creating a diagram of a natural resource and how it’s harvested.

You can never know what is in your own backyard until you have explored and researched.

What is Project Based Learning?:

Project Based Learning is a method of teaching where students have a question or topic that relates to the curriculum that they work on for an extended period of time in an engaging, creative, and experimental manner and respond to the question through a challenge. The difference between PBL and creating a project is that projects are created AFTER learning and PBL allows students to learn through the entire process and toward a goal of answering a challenge or question.

The project is focused on student’s learning goals and curriculum using creativity, critical thinking, problem solving and self-management.

The best part about PBL is that it is brings a lot of learning subjects together in one project, allowing students to spend a lot of time on their PBL while meeting many aspects of the curriculum all at once.

My students have used this online and in person. For the online, I had to put a little work into making it be student friendly. However, overall, this is a very comprehensive project for students. They enjoy the choice aspect of the project (discover 4 types, then they dive deeper into one of their choosing).
