I absolutely loved the Halloween “Drawing Lines on Pumpkins” activity! It was an excellent addition to our art curriculum, providing a fun and engaging way to teach students about different types of lines and basic artistic techniques. The activity was both educational and interactive, allowing students to explore creativity while reinforcing important art concepts. The children were highly engaged and genuinely enjoyed the process of designing their pumpkins with a variety of line patterns. It was rewarding to see their confidence grow as they experimented with straight, curved, zigzag, and wavy lines. This activity not only strengthened their understanding of line work but also encouraged fine motor skills, attention to detail, and self-expression. Overall, this lesson was a perfect combination of seasonal fun and meaningful art instruction. I would highly recommend it to any educator looking to incorporate hands-on, educational, and enjoyable activities into their art program. It was a wonderful success with my students, and I look forward to using similar activities in the future!

I used this with a multi grade autism class and I was able to adapt it to the different aged students. They turned out looking so good! I loved the step by step instructions and put it on the SmartBoard.

In this free Halloween Pumpkin Line Art project, students explore the Element of Art: Line as they create a mixed media jack-o'-lantern. It is an easy-to-use art tutorial that helps you plan quickly, teach with confidence and keep students engaged.

The lesson comes with everything students need to complete the piece successfully: a visual and text step-by-step with each step on its own page, a rubric, a lesson plan, a finished example and a student handout.

WHAT'S INCLUDED (PDF)

  • Visual and text step-by-step, each step on its own page with a description
  • Lesson plan with the materials list
  • Rubric for marking
  • Finished example
  • Step-by-step student handout

Materials: pencil, eraser, black felt marker, 30 step-by-step drawing handouts, orange and yellow paint, card stock and construction paper, oil pastels, paint brush and water.

HOW TO USE IT

Look over the lesson plan to see the steps and the materials you need, and gather them in advance so there is no panic during the lesson. You may want to make a sample yourself first so you can help students later. Photocopy the student handouts, such as the step-by-steps and rubric.

Print the poster sample in color to show students what they are making before you start, as your hook. Then project the PDF, show it under a document camera (best printed in color), or use it as your own guide while you demonstrate. Every step has both a visual and a text description, which keeps things clear for students.

I used this art project in my 3rd and 4th grade special day class. They really liked this! I taught the art project whole group so it took longer than expected, but they were able to follow along with me, and follow the directions. All of their pumpkins came out so cute! This is a must do!
