These are great for bell work. I use them when the students come in and can practice their printing.

Overall rating on TPT: 5.0 out of 5 from 2 ratings (see every rating on TPT). These are selected 4- and 5-star written reviews by teachers on TPT (Teachers Pay Teachers), shown word for word. TPT's newer 4-point scale ("Extremely satisfied" = 4) is converted to stars.

This January Write and Draw resource pairs a step-by-step directed drawing with sentence writing practice for K to 2 students. On each page, students draw a January picture, trace and write the word, trace and write a simple sentence, and then write their own sentence using the word.

Drawing first gives young writers something real to look at, talk about and write about. The drawings follow January and winter themes: owl, polar bear, arctic fox, seal, penguin, moose, deer, wolf, lynx, snowflake, ice skate, hot chocolate, snowman, pine tree, winter hat, icicle, scarf, tree, party hat, penguin, clock, candle, snow globe, bear and narwhal.

HOW TO USE IT

Use the pages for daily writing practice, morning work, writing centers, art centers, early finishers, sub plans or homeschool writing practice. Print single pages as you need them, or turn the set into a January booklet that students work through over time.

Every page follows the same format, so students get repeated practice and know what to expect. It suits visual learners and reluctant writers especially well, because the drawing gives them a starting point before the writing. It builds sentence writing, handwriting, vocabulary, drawing confidence and fine motor skills.

FAQ

Who is this for?

Classroom teachers, homeschool educators, substitute teachers and art teachers working with K to 2 students.

What kind of writing does it support?

Sentence writing. Students trace and write a themed word, trace and write a simple sentence, and write their own sentence using the word.

How long does each page take?

It depends on the student, your writing expectations and how much detail they add. Most pages fit in one class or writing block, and students who color carefully may take longer.

Is it editable?

No. It is a non-editable PDF.

Do students need to be strong artists?

No. The drawing steps are there so every student can succeed, and they can add their own details once they finish.
