I was looking for a way to start art journaling in my HS art classes and this is it! I love the format choices and the topics. I can't wait to see what my students will create!

This high school sketchbook program for grades 9 to 12 helps teen artists move beyond practice into personal expression, identity exploration and artistic growth. It includes 30 sketchbook assignments and 15 interactive sketchbook pages that ask students to reflect, explore and create.

Use it in a visual arts class, an AP art program, a mixed-grade elective or a homeschool studio. The prompts work as daily warm-ups, bell ringers, independent projects or a semester-long sketchbook practice that builds creative habits and confidence.

WHAT'S INCLUDED (90 PAGES, NON-EDITABLE, AMERICAN ENGLISH)

  • Unit Plan (3 pages) with learning goals for a full sketchbook curriculum
  • Lesson Plan Template: Big Ideas, Content and Competencies, plus a Teacher Does / Student Does guide
  • Sketchbook Rubric for creativity, technical growth, craftsmanship and self-expression
  • Sketchbook Grading Sheet (4 per page)
  • How to Start Up a Sketchbook student guide
  • How to Use Interactive Pages guide
  • 15 Interactive Sketchbook Pages and Graphic Organizers: Title Page (with criteria and example), Sketchbook Rules, Mediums and Materials to Use, Image-Development Strategies, What Is the Creative Process?, Artist Goals, Personal Interests in Art, Likes and Dislikes, Themes to Pursue, Techniques I Wish to Learn, Artists I Am Inspired By, Freestyle Doodle Page, Wreck This Page, Photo Clip Prompt, and Reflection: Before / Middle / End
  • 30 Sketchbook Assignments, each with a full-page poster prompt (text and visual sample) and a glue-in prompt (four small versions per page with cutting guides)

HOW TO USE IT

The poster prompt is your visual hook for the day's assignment. Laminate or project it to set expectations for quality, experimentation and completeness.

The glue-in prompt is a student-sized version for multi-day projects. Students glue it to the top of the page or opposite the drawing area, which keeps their sketchbooks organized. The interactive pages can be cut out and glued into any 8.5 x 11 sketchbook, or kept in a binder or duotang.

FAQ

Does it work for students with little art experience?

Yes. The prompts are open-ended, so they suit beginners and advanced students, and they encourage reflection and creative risk-taking.

Can I use it for a full year?

Yes. With 30 assignments and 15 interactive pages, there is enough for daily or weekly sketchbook use across a semester or full school year.

Can I use it for homeschool high school art?

Yes. It gives structure and purpose while leaving room for independent expression, which suits self-paced high school art programs.

What size sketchbook do I need?

An 8.5 x 11 inch sketchbook or larger works best. A binder or duotang works if you do not have a sketchbook.

Great to be able to save each page as a PDF so it can be easily uploaded to Google Classroom. Nice Friday sketchbook assignment as it's not too complicated or boring for students to complete on their own!

I didn't use every part of this resource but rather chose the prompts as I went. Very engaging. I found it helpful for students who never seem to know what to put into their sketchbook! i plan to use it again this year.

I all in all liked the prompts so I gave it four stars, but was really hoping that an empty copy of the sketchbook "poster" prompts would be included (a copy with a blank box) so students could draw directly on printed prompt pages ( and the original poster prompts included to show for examples). I posted this as a question to see if I could maybe get a blank copy (which is why I purchased this item) and never received a response from the seller.
