This Santa Claus Art Project is a festive Christmas art lesson to teach before winter break. Students follow a guided drawing tutorial to create a jolly Santa Claus, then use sponge painting and cotton swab techniques to add texture and depth.

Along the way they work with oil pastels and paint, building confidence in drawing, blending and layering colors. It is a low-prep, step-by-step resource for art teachers, classroom teachers and homeschooling parents.

HOW TO USE IT

Read through the lesson plan and the visual and text step-by-steps, and gather your materials ahead of time. You may want to make a sample yourself first. Print the poster sample in color to show students what they are making (it is your hook), and photocopy the step-by-step handouts and rubrics you need.

During the lesson, show the PDF on your projector or under a document camera, or use it as your guide while you demonstrate. Every step has a picture and a text description, so students can follow along clearly.

Materials: pencil, eraser, white crayon or pencil crayon, step-by-step draw handouts, cotton swabs and cotton balls, green construction paper, oil pastels and white paint (any type).
