★★★★★

My students loved this step by step craft and they were able to complete it independently.

This Autumn Scarecrow Art Lesson is a fall art project for K to 3. Students create a cheerful scarecrow artwork while practicing drawing, line work, shape building, painting and an oil pastel resist, and it comes with both a PDF tutorial and a PowerPoint tutorial so you can project, click through slides or demonstrate live.

It also includes reading comprehension, writing prompts, reflections, rubric pages, bulletin board pieces and extension activities, so you can teach it as an art lesson on its own or expand it into a literacy-integrated project. It works for art teachers, classroom teachers, homeschool families and sub plans.

HOW TO USE IT

Start with the puzzle hook, KWL chart and scarecrow reading, then teach the project with the PDF tutorial, the PowerPoint or a live demonstration. Students draw the scarecrow, add oil pastel, then paint over it so the pastel resists the paint.

Materials: oil pastels, white cardstock or thick white paper, watercolor paints or tempera paint cakes or tempera paint, paintbrushes and water. Afterward, pick from the reading, writing and reflection pages to fit your time, and use the display sign for an autumn bulletin board in October or November.
