These are pretty good, but I wish the formatting was a little different so that word were not hyphenated. Also it would be great if there were more self-assessment cards.

These Art Critique Task Cards make it easier to get students talking and thinking more deeply about art. They are a practical, reusable resource for teachers, art teachers and homeschoolers who want to build art discussion, critical thinking, art vocabulary, art analysis and student reflection without photocopying piles of worksheets.

The resource has two sets of prompts. One set is for viewing artworks, for artist studies, contemporary and historical art, and class discussion. The other is for student reflection on their own artwork, for end-of-project reflection, peer critique and critique circles. Students focus on one question at a time and can respond orally, in writing, with a partner, in a small group or as a whole class.

WHAT'S INCLUDED (NON-EDITABLE PDF)

  • Cover page
  • Teacher information and how-to-use page explaining what task cards are, why they work and how to prep and use them
  • Art Critique Task Cards: Viewing Artworks for historical, contemporary and peer artworks
  • Art Critique Task Cards: Student Reflection on Own Artwork
  • 50 task cards in total, in gray scale to save color ink

The Viewing Artworks cards ask students what is going on in the artwork, what the artist emphasized, which elements of art and principles of design they see, the subject matter and message, materials and techniques, how the title affects meaning, how the work makes them feel, themes and symbols, and what it reveals about time, place, culture or the artist.

The Student Reflection cards ask students about their focal point, the elements and principles they used, their materials and why, techniques and processes, their big idea or message, artistic goals, inspiration, any artist or art movement that influenced them, challenges they overcame, what they learned, and whether the work explores a social or personal issue.

HOW TO USE IT

Print in gray scale and laminate for long-lasting use. Store the cards in a bin, jar, basket or baggie, or hole-punch a corner and put them on a ring. Students can choose cards on their own, or you can use one card at a time with the whole class.

Use them as whole-class prompts, individual assignments, written responses, discussion questions, classroom critiques of historical or contemporary artworks, peer critique, exit tickets, art centers, sub plans, early finisher tasks, sketchbook or portfolio reflection, or in place of photocopied worksheet packets.

I was seeking something like this that I didn't need to prepare. It surprised me how much my students have enjoyed observing art with these questions. They get to do the questioning and answering while I monitor and assist.
