★★★★★

I started with the Grade 1 and moved right into the Grade 2, and the improvement in my students' art was amazing now that they know all the elements of art.

This Grade 2 Elements of Art Complete Lesson Unit teaches all seven Elements of Art through the high-interest theme of INSECTS. It is a ready-made, no-prep art unit for art teachers, classroom teachers and homeschool parents.

Start with the video introduction, then guide students through 7 step-by-step art projects, one for each element, and 7 choice-based art lessons that let them explore and experiment. A viewing art activity and a choice-based end of unit project round it out.

WHAT'S INCLUDED (FULLY PLANNED, NON-EDITABLE PDFS IN A FOLDER)

  • Unit plan with the scope and sequence
  • 2 Introduction to the Elements of Art lessons with full lesson plans and worksheets, plus 1 video that introduces the Elements of Art, why artists use them and the insect theme
  • 7 fully planned art lesson tutorials, each with a complete lesson plan (hook, participation strategies, steps and conclusion), step-by-step tutorial, artwork examples, display sign, rubric, assessment and reflection
  • 7 choice-based art lessons, each with a lesson plan, planning, rough draft and artwork pages, rubric and reflection pages (no examples, so students lead their own ideas)
  • Viewing art lesson activity with a poem and a reading about art exhibitions
  • Choice-based end of unit art project
  • Black-line printables for easy photocopying

THE 7 ART PROJECTS

  • Line: beetle line art with a pattern background that places emphasis on the beetle
  • Color: a color wheel with a butterfly silhouette and color mixing, plus a poem about butterflies and color mixing
  • Value: a dragonfly in soft pastel, blending tints and shades
  • Shape: a ladybug with a geometric and organic shape mosaic background, plus an article about geometric shapes and ladybugs
  • Form: cube-shaped caterpillars that students can personalize
  • Space: overlapping butterflies that create implied depth
  • Texture: a honey bee and flower using line for texture, in an oil pastel and watercolor resist

HOW TO USE IT

Review the unit plan for the teaching sequence, start with the introductory lessons and video, then pick a lesson and teach. Print a master copy into a binder (the binder cover is included), photocopy student pages as needed, and follow each lesson plan from hook to conclusion. Use the choice-based lessons before a tutorial to practice and play, or after it to reinforce concepts.

In the viewing art activity, students look at an artwork from art history, identify the Elements of Art in it and respond to critical thinking questions. For the end of unit project, the class creates student-led criteria and each student makes an artwork that uses two Elements of Art and the insect theme.
