Color Wheel Art Projects

The color wheel can be the most exciting lesson of the year when it turns into a wolf, a fish or a unicorn instead of a worksheet. These are my color wheel and color mixing art projects, plus free ideas from the blog and my Color Mixing Lab.

Questions teachers and parents ask

How do you teach the color wheel to kids?

Start with mixing primary colors, then build the wheel inside a fun subject so kids practice color order while making real art.

What grade learns the color wheel?

Primary colors usually start in kindergarten, and the full color wheel fits well in grades 2 to 5, with deeper color theory in middle school.

What paint is best for color mixing?

Tempera or washable paint in red, yellow and blue (plus white) is all you need.

Is there a free color wheel printable?

Yes. My Color Mixing Lab lets kids mix colors on screen and print a color wheel cheat sheet.
