This Shamrock Mixed Media Line Art Project is a bold St. Patrick's Day lesson that teaches the Elements of Art while introducing mixed media. Students combine tempera paint, oil pastels, color mixing and expressive line design to make a vibrant, layered March artwork.

Students build a large shamrock with bold oil pastel outlines, mix yellow and blue tempera wet-on-wet to make green, practice water control and blending, then add expressive line patterns and contrast. It is a structured, step-by-step lesson for elementary classrooms, homeschool art and seasonal art units, and it works especially well for upper elementary.

WHAT'S INCLUDED (NON-EDITABLE)

  • Full step-by-step visual and written instructions
  • Teacher lesson plan with learning targets and an inquiry question
  • Student rubric (30-point assessment)
  • Student reflection page
  • Artist statement template
  • Example artwork preview
  • Structured oil pastel and tempera painting process

MATERIALS

Tempera paint (yellow, blue and white), black oil pastel, white oil pastel, thick paper or cardstock, and a paintbrush and water. No specialty supplies are needed.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

Students use an oil pastel resist with tempera paint, mix and blend color directly on paper, control water in their painting, and design line patterns such as zigzags, swirls, curves and dashed lines. They create contrast with dark outlines and light highlights, and build craftsmanship as they cut out and finish their shamrock.

The Elements of Art focus is line (expressive, decorative line), color (mixing primaries to make green), texture (layering paint and oil pastel), shape (the shamrock form), value (light and dark greens) and space and composition (a strong focal point).

HOW TO USE IT

Project the step-by-step instructions for guided teaching, demonstrate the painting techniques live, or let students follow along on their own. The rubric and reflection pages work for assessment and portfolios. It suits St. Patrick's Day and March art, elementary art curriculum, homeschool art, structured sub plans, and bulletin board or hallway displays.
