Selected reviews from TPT

★★★★★

I did this with all three JH grades and the kids enjoyed it. I was able to stop the video for the 6th graders to let them go at a slower pace. I used this project for Asia.American History Month and my classes were all engaged. They liked drawing their own subjects to paint and the instructions for painting were helpful too. The only thing I didn’t like was how fhe girl’s right arm was drawn. 100% of my kids thought it looked awkward so I changed it to look less awkward. Overall, this is a great lesson and I’ll definitely do it again.

Are you looking for a Japanese art lesson that feels elegant, thoughtful, and truly beautiful when finished? Do you want an art history activity that helps students connect with a historical artwork while also building skills in watercolor painting, line, shape, pattern, texture, and figure drawing? This Beauty In Snow art project is such a lovely choice for art teachers, classroom teachers, and homeschool families who want an art lesson that feels meaningful, creative, and highly display worthy.

This Japanese art project is inspired by the historical artwork Beauty in Snow and the work of Japanese artist Utagawa Kunimasa. Students create a graceful winter scene featuring a beautifully dressed figure, blossoms, and a patterned umbrella while exploring expressive outlines and painted washes. The final artwork has such a calm and sophisticated feel, which makes it a wonderful fit for older students who are ready for something a little more detailed and artistic.

WHY TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOL FAMILIES WILL LOVE THIS RESOURCE

This Beauty In Snow art lesson is such a beautiful way to bring Japanese art history into the classroom through hands on creativity. Students are not only learning about a historical artwork. They are responding to it through line, composition, pattern, color, and figure drawing, which helps the lesson feel far more memorable and meaningful.

It is also a wonderful lesson for exploring watercolor techniques in a more refined and expressive way. Students can work with painted washes, detailed black line, and textured backgrounds to create an artwork that feels layered and elegant. That gives the final piece a lovely balance of structure and creativity.

And honestly, the finished artwork is stunning. The patterned clothing, winter blossoms, snowfall, and umbrella details give this project such a graceful look. It is one of those lessons that makes a display board look instantly more artistic.
