In this Easter Bunny Wax Resist Art Project, students draw a realistic bunny step by step, surround it with decorative Easter eggs, spring flowers and grass, and then use crayons or oil pastels with watercolor paint to create a vibrant wax resist effect. The wax repels the paint, so the colors and linework stay bold through the painted background.

It is a mixed media spring lesson for elementary art classrooms, homeschool art, sub plans and seasonal displays. Students practice drawing, pattern design, color blending, composition and mixed media techniques, and especially enjoy decorating their eggs with their own patterns.

HOW IT WORKS

Introduce the lesson with the example artwork, then guide students through the directed drawing steps for the bunny, eggs, flowers and grass. Students outline their drawing in black marker and decorate their eggs with patterns.

Next they color areas with wax crayons or oil pastels, then paint watercolor across the background and eggs. The wax repels the paint, revealing their drawings through the color. The finished pieces make a cheerful spring bulletin board.
