This Color Mixing Peacock Art Lesson is a low-prep art lesson for Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3. Students learn color theory by mixing primary colors to make secondary colors while they create a bright peacock with oil pastel and watercolor or tempera paint.

It is a full lesson for general educators, art teachers and homeschool parents, with literacy integration built in through a reading passage and a poem about color. Along the way students build fine motor skills, practice color recognition and mixing, and gain confidence as they layer pastels and paint.

HOW TO USE IT

Open the PowerPoint or PDF on your smartboard or projector and follow the step-by-step tutorial as a class. Discuss color theory with the poem and reading passage, then assess with the rubric and student reflections. No art background is needed.

Use it as a primary art lesson, a sub plan or a homeschool art activity, during an Elements of Art: Color unit or color theory introduction, to support early primary science or fine arts connections, or as a seasonal autumn lesson that ties into peacock symbolism and fall colors. You can adjust it to your students' needs and class time.
