Love this simple plan with no expensive or hard to acquire materials. If you have clay you can do this plan

Create a Ceramic Slab Slump Bowl with your students, a good way to introduce a new hand-building method in clay. Students learn to make a ceramic bowl using slab building, a press mold and additive methods, working with a variety of processes, materials, tools and techniques.

The lesson includes a visual and text step-by-step with each step on its own page, a lesson plan, a rubric, a finished example and a student handout. Please note that the lesson demonstrates how to build only. You can glaze, underglaze or paint the bowls however suits the resources and budget you have.

HOW TO USE IT

Read the lesson plan and gather the materials in advance. Look over the visual and text step-by-steps, and consider making a sample yourself. Photocopy the step-by-step handouts and rubrics, and print the poster sample in color to show students as your hook. Project the step-by-step pages, use a document camera, or demonstrate from them yourself.

Materials: your choice of clay (typically firing clay), wood tools, paper bowls or other bowls to use as molds, paper towel, a scoring tool such as a plastic fork, rubber ribs, metal tools or stamps, and copies of the step-by-step handout.

FAQ

Does the lesson cover glazing?

No. It shows how to build the bowl only. The 4 Ways to Finish Ceramic Art Pieces handout explains different finishing options.

What hand-building methods are used?

Slab building, a press mold and additive methods.

How do I show the steps?

Project the PDF, use a document camera (best printed in color), or demonstrate from the step-by-step pages yourself.
