I am always on the hunt for new ways to have students evaluate their work, and this fits in with what I want my students to be able to do/how I would like them to respond.

This Art Reflection Workbook helps students go deeper than "I liked it" when they think and write about their own artwork. The guided pages ask students to reflect on their materials, choices, message, inspiration, strengths, challenges and artistic growth, building reflection, critical thinking, art vocabulary and self-assessment skills.

It is made for teachers, art teachers and homeschoolers working with elementary and middle school students. It is especially useful for end of year and end of semester reflection, when students have a real body of work to look back on, and it can also be used page by page all year.

WHAT STUDENTS REFLECT ON

The prompts cover the mediums and materials students used and why, the elements of art and principles of design, whether the work feels real or surreal, subject matter, title, the emotions they want viewers to feel, the big idea and message, inspiration, social or personal issues, symbols, strengths, weaknesses, next steps, challenges overcome, and artistic growth and future direction.

Along the way students observe, analyze, describe, question, explain, compare, conclude and reflect. The graphic organizers suit shorter reflection tasks, and the writing pages support longer written responses.

HOW TO USE IT

Use it as a full workbook, going in order, or pick the pages you need as single reflection lessons. It fits end of year or end of semester reflection, after a major project, portfolio prep, art critique lessons, sketchbook reflection, early finisher work, sub plans, class discussions, tracking artistic growth, or as binder or duo tang pages.
