This Autumn Hedgehog Art Project is a seasonal mixed media lesson for Grades 1 to 4. Students create a hedgehog surrounded by autumn leaves in a warm fall setting, using oil pastels, watercolor paint, tempera paint and paper.

Students build the scene in layers: a glowing autumn background, foliage and grass, a drawn and painted hedgehog with textured spikes, and cut-and-glued fall leaves. The hedgehog is the focal point, and the finished pieces look lovely in hallway displays and on bulletin boards.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

Students explore layering, texture, seasonal color, composition, focal point and mixed media processes, including cut-and-glue assembly. Building the background, hedgehog and leaves as separate layers shows younger students how artists put a scene together.

Use it as an autumn art lesson, woodland or fall animal project, homeschool art activity or sub plan. The step-by-step pages make it easy to guide students through each stage.
