YOUTUBE FOR LEARNING NEW ART MAKING TECHNIQUES:

With your Middle School or High School kids, you can definitely invite them to find an art making technique or process done by an artist on YouTube and have them follow the tutorial to learn it. Lots of professional artists have YouTube channels and this is a great way for kids to learn from artists when you can’t have the artist come to your classroom to do a demonstration or give a talk. If you’re teaching acrylic paints, then as an exploration assignment, kids could look up acrylic paint technique tutorials and pick one to do in class. Or same for any medium or art process, whether it is Ceramics or Photography, let them explore a video to learn a new technique. There are amazing videos out there and these students probably have technology in their pockets they can use. I am sure they will love you for letting them explore YouTube on their phones in class. Huge Credibility points for youuuu art teacher! Engaged? Check!

YOUTUBE FOR ART LESSON IDEAS:

You can find an endless supply of art lesson ideas on YouTube. Type in your theme… such as Alma Woodsey Thomas or Rainforest or Ocean and the word “Art Lesson” and hit search. POOF! Scroll, preview the lesson and hit play for your kids or use it as inspiration for creating your own art lesson.

YouTube has an endless supply of drawing tutorials out there. Lots of people have favorite channels they love to subscribe to and watch! Find a fun, classroom friendly channel to subscribe to. These drawing tutorials are perfect to use when you have an awkward 10 minutes left in a class, or to use on days when you’re exhausted. They’re good for teaching technical drawing skills and are wonderful for fine motor development. As well, you can create a Playlist for your students and have the link to the list on your classroom blog or site and kids can go to it can watch videos from the playlist and follow along as a “when-you’re-done” activity. These drawing tutorials are also perfect to use for your younger students!

YOUTUBE GALLERY VISITS:

A lot of big galleries, such as the Museum of Modern Art, will create videos that explore some of the shows that are curated at their galleries. These are done professionally and are amazing resources to show your students as it is not always possible to take kids to these galleries. So bring them to your classroom! Search up your favorite gallery or some of the big galleries in our world and see if they have a YouTube Channel you can explore!

YOUTUBE ARTIST TALKS:

Can’t have an artist come talk to your kids? Look up artist talks on YouTube! You can be surprised at what you might find on the old YouTube! It is ever growing and evolving and of course, more and more content is added there by people we want to hear from. For this? We want to hear from artists! You can look up contemporary artists or artists in your area or from your country and see if they have a channel or have done an Artist Talk somewhere, like at a gallery at one of their shows. Lots of stuff is now being recorded for everyone to listen to so I highly recommend that you search and do some digging and see what you can find!
