In this Picasso Bird Art Project, students create a bird inspired by Pablo Picasso using oil pastels and acrylic or tempera paint. The finished artwork is bold and whimsical, with oversized shapes, bright color and strong line work, and it looks great on display.
It is written for teachers, art teachers and homeschoolers working with Grades 3 to 5. The lesson helps students loosen up, try unusual shapes and make art that does not have to look realistic to be successful, while exploring bold color, playful shape and expressive line.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN
The Warm-Up Art Challenge and student reading page introduce Picasso's bold style, his love of shapes and color, and the playful, imaginative ways he explored art. This helps students connect their own artwork to a famous artist.
Students then make a big bird with colorful bodies, striped and curved oil pastel details, blue wings and tails, and strong black outlines. Even when they follow the same general steps, their lines, colors and details make each bird unique. The finished pieces work well on bulletin boards, hallway displays and art show walls.
