Winter Snow Kitty Art Project for Kids with Printable Art Lesson Plans
I love teaching kids how to use soft pastels so in this art lesson tutorial I will provide you with a simple yet effective winter snow kitty art lesson to get students in your classroom exploring art making mediums with simple strategies to create an art project featuring a cute cat in the snow. Read on to find the steps for creating and the full art lesson and downloadable PDF lesson plan and worksheets.

Materials and Hook for the Art Lesson
For this art lesson, you will need soft pastels or chalk pastel and a choice color piece of paper. I like to use construction paper for soft pastel paper and you can allow students to choose any cool color paper for their background.
Begin the lesson with hooking your students on the lesson. You can click here and follow the full video art lesson and create an example to show your students or you can start off with a classroom discussion and ask them a question: “What animals do we see in the winter?” “Do all animals hibernate?” Record all their answers on chart paper or on the board.
Next, you can explain you will be creating an artwork of a kitty in the snow using soft pastels.
Step 1: Draw the top of the Cat and Snow

Start the artwork by drawing the top of the cat with snow on its head and use wavy lines to draw snow on the bottom. Use white or light blue soft pastel to draw with as black outlines will go on last to prevent a big mess. Model drawing it large or show them the full video art lesson that you can watch by clicking here.
Step 2: Draw the body

Next, draw the bottom of the cat’s head with a curved line. From there, draw two lines down to connect to the snow to create the body.
Step 3: Add facial details

Draw the legs, tail, and face. Color the cat with your choice cat color.
Step 4: Color and Outline

Finish coloring all the cat details with soft pastel and gently smooth out the pastel with your finger. Draw snow dots in the background and smooth them out till they glow with a finger.
When everything is colored, use the edge of a black soft pastel to outline your cat to complete your art and shake off the dust gently into a garbage can (no blowing!).
