Fall into Autumn: Art Projects for September

The air is crisp, the leaves are just beginning to change, and classrooms are buzzing with that unmistakable September energy. For art teachers, autumn isn’t just a season — it’s a palette of warm colors, cozy textures, and endless inspiration waiting to spill onto the page. This is the time of year when routines are forming, students are eager to create, and every project feels like a fresh start.

In this post, I’m sharing a collection of September art lesson ideas, autumn sketchbook prompts, and practical teaching tips that will help you spark creativity from the very first weeks of school. Whether you’re teaching kindergarten, middle school, or high school, these ideas will bring the beauty of fall into your art room while keeping things simple, engaging, and inspiring.

A Story from My September Classroom 🍂

I’ll never forget one September afternoon in my art room. The school year had just begun, and I was still learning the names of all my students. The tables were covered in paper scraps, paintbrushes were rolling onto the floor, and one student had somehow managed to glue their sleeve to the desk (we’ve all been there, right?). I remember standing in the middle of the room, trying to give directions while kids called out questions, and thinking to myself: How am I going to do this all year?

September always felt like such a beautiful but overwhelming month. The kids came in buzzing with energy, full of excitement for the new school year, and I wanted so badly to capture that energy and channel it into artmaking. But without the right systems, routines, or seasonal projects ready to go, I often ended the day completely drained. By the time the last bell rang, I’d sink into my chair, staring at half-written lesson plans and feeling like I was already behind.

That’s why I created my FREE September Art Inspiration Guide — because I know what it feels like to want to give your students magical, creative lessons, but not have the time or energy to pull it all together. This guide is filled with exactly what I needed back then: autumn-inspired art projects for every grade level (K–12), seasonal sketchbook prompts, and September teaching tips that will help you set routines and build community while still keeping lessons fresh and inspiring.

It’s quick, practical, and designed to save you time so you can focus on what really matters — watching your students light up when they create something they’re proud of.

Autumn Directed Drawings

The first resource that I love to have on hand are autumn directed drawings. Directed drawings are great for encouraging fine motor skills and following steps, but also you can make them as big or as small as you want. You can even encourage creative thinking by allowing students to create them in choice art mediums or adding their own artist flavor to the design after having followed the steps to create the initial drawing. They can be as simple as drawings on paper or in journals or sketchbooks, or you can take them and make them into artworks! It is really up to you on how you use them, and they are great to have on hand when you need flexible resources in the first or second month of school. They’re also great for building confidence in drawing in your students!

You can grab the directed drawings by clicking here.

Or for a roll and draw directed drawing version, click here.

Dot Day Art Lesson!

Once September rolls around, then you gotta get ready for Dot Day! International Dot Day is September 15th of every year and is a fabulous was to explore art, build student confidence, and encourage Growth Mindset. Dot Day is inspired by Peter H. Reynold’s “The Dot” and you can register your classroom and find resources on their website.

I have a Dot Day Art Resource that includes 2 different art tutorials, a reading comprehension activity, and writing activities! It allows kids to make a mark and see what happens.

If you want a Dot Day art resource, click here to grab one!

Autumn Grid Drawings

I like to include some grid drawing during the school year because they help students build their confidence and drawing skills. For younger students, I do autumn themed cartoons that they can copy. However, for your Middle School and High School students, have them do black and white images so they can practice value and shading. Of course, these can also have an autumn theme to make them engaging for fall. These can be stand alone art lessons or they can be used as either bell ringers for the week or fast finisher activities to other lessons. These are also great to have in your sub tub, just incase something comes up and you need an art lesson that anyone can teach.

You can grab the elementary leveled cartoon grid draws here.

Or for your Middle and High School students, grab the autumn photograph grid draws here.

Autumn Challenge Cards

Art challenge cards are a great way to encourage creative and critical thinking while also reinforcing skills learned and allowing for continued practice. I like to have a variety of challenge cards that reinforce the elements of art through an engaging theme. Because it is September, I like to have autumn themed art challenge cards and then have them explore concepts like the Elements of Art or creativity. These are great to use as both bell ringers and fast finishers. You can even have a classroom or individual prize for completing them all!

Autumn Art Lessons Kids Love 🍂

One of the easiest ways to bring the season into your classroom is with ready-to-go projects that celebrate all things autumn. Over the years, I’ve seen how much kids enjoy creating art inspired by pumpkins, scarecrows, acorns, and the warm colors of fall. Not only do these themes connect to what’s happening outside their classroom windows, but they also make abstract art concepts—like contrast, emphasis, line, and shape—feel more approachable and exciting.

I’ve put together a collection of autumn-themed art lessons that focus on these very ideas while keeping things flexible for busy teachers. Each lesson is open-ended, meaning students can explore their own creativity while still working within a clear structure. Some teachers love using them as sub plans or during especially hectic weeks, while others return to them year after year as staple autumn projects.

Here’s what teachers have shared:

“I used a few of these lessons as Sub lessons and the students had so much fun creating and drawing the corn, acorn and scarecrow lesson!” – Aimee F.

“I bought this resource so I could use it over several years. I teach art once a week and have 1st–8th graders. My students stay the same each year. Thank you for such a versatile compilation of art projects.” – Malisa T.

Each project is designed around an element or principle of art and comes with a clear visual guide, so students can work more independently. That makes it perfect for classrooms, homeschool settings, or even those days when you just need something meaningful but low-prep.

Autumn Meets Van Gogh’s Starry Night 🌌🍂

There’s something magical about blending the beauty of autumn with the swirling skies of Van Gogh’s Starry Night. Students light up when they realize they can take one of the world’s most famous paintings and reimagine it through the colors, textures, and atmosphere of fall. It’s a project that feels both seasonal and timeless — giving kids the chance to explore art history while creating something that’s uniquely their own.

Teachers who have tried this lesson notice how accessible it is:

“Great step by step directions with images that was easy to display for the students to see while we created!” – Aimee F.

“My student loved using this resource in my class. They had a little trouble in the beginning at first but enjoyed the resource and completed the project.” – Carlos M. B.

This project introduces students to post-impressionist techniques like layering, texture, and expressive mark-making, while tying them to cozy autumn themes. Oil pastels and paint combine to create stunning mixed-media skies, glowing moons, and rolling fall landscapes.

The best part is how flexible it can be — whether you’re teaching in an art classroom, traveling with art-on-a-cart, homeschooling, or even preparing sub plans, this lesson offers a structured yet creative way for students to experience both art history and the spirit of the season.

Yayoi Kusama Pumpkins for Autumn 🎃✨

Few artists capture students’ imaginations quite like Yayoi Kusama. Her bold patterns, playful use of repetition, and love of pumpkins make her the perfect inspiration for an autumn art project. Kids immediately connect with the dots, the vibrant contrasts, and the larger-than-life feel of her work — and the results look incredible when displayed in the hallway or shared with families.

Teachers who’ve tried this lesson noticed how much their students loved it:

“My kiddos did a great job with this. Yayoi Kusama is always a hit and these looked great in the halls!” – Alexandra G.

“We made some really awesome art with this and ended up framing it for the parents. Great resource. Thanks.” – Amanda W.

This project guides students through creating their own Kusama-inspired pumpkin artwork while exploring essential skills like layering, pattern, and texture. Using paint, black oil pastel, and simple mixed-media techniques, kids create striking pieces that celebrate both contemporary art and the season of fall.

It’s flexible enough for classrooms, art-on-a-cart teachers, or homeschool families — you can project the step-by-step visuals for group instruction, hand out guides for independent work, or adapt it into a seasonal sub plan. Best of all, it’s low-prep while still being high-impact, so the focus stays on creativity and self-expression.

Autumn Guinea Pig Art Project 🐹🍂

Sometimes the most unexpected subjects make the best seasonal art projects — and guinea pigs are definitely a favorite! Kids love animals, and combining that love with autumn colors and textures is a guaranteed way to keep engagement high. This lesson invites students to create an adorable mixed-media guinea pig artwork, layered with paint, oil pastel, and paper details. The result is a piece that’s both whimsical and full of fall flair — perfect for a bulletin board display that will make everyone smile as they walk by.

What makes this project so special is the way it encourages experimentation with contrast, value, and layering. Students build confidence in their art-making while discovering how to make their guinea pig “pop” against a cozy autumn background. With step-by-step visuals, a guided drawing handout, and a finished example, kids are supported every step of the way — while still leaving plenty of room for creative choices and personality.

Whether you’re in a classroom, on a cart, or homeschooling, this project is flexible enough to fit into your fall plans. It works beautifully as part of an autumn unit, a seasonal sub plan, or even just a fun one-off project that turns into a show-stopping display.

Autumn Fox Artwork 🦊🍂

There’s something magical about foxes in the fall. With their fiery fur and playful personalities, they seem perfectly at home in the season of changing leaves and crisp air. That’s why this Autumn Fox Art Project is always such a hit with students — it captures the spirit of autumn in a way that feels fun, approachable, and exciting for young artists.

Students experiment with oil pastel marks and tempera paint, layering textures and colors to bring their foxes to life. The lesson doesn’t just focus on technique — it also weaves in literacy with an autumn-themed reading, plus a creative warm-up hook to set the mood. The result? Students feel more connected to the theme and are able to pour that inspiration into their artwork.

Here’s what one teacher shared about using this lesson in the classroom:

“My students loved this fall fox art! They did a wonderful job. The directions were easy to follow for the students.” – Megan D.

Designed with 1st through 4th grade in mind, this project is flexible enough to use in classrooms, homeschools, or even as a seasonal sub plan. The step-by-step visuals, rubrics, reflections, and display sign make it easy to implement — while the final fox artworks make for a beautiful bulletin board display that truly feels like autumn.

Colorful Pumpkins & Gourds 🎨🎃🍂

Nothing says autumn quite like pumpkins and gourds. Their unique shapes, ridges, and vibrant colors make them the perfect subject for seasonal art lessons. This Colorful Pumpkin and Gourd Project invites students to look closely at these autumn treasures and bring them to life with bold oil pastel marks and rich layers of tempera paint.

The lesson is designed to be more than just an art project — it’s a chance for students to explore the elements of line, color, and texture while practicing creative expression. An autumn-themed reading and warm-up activity set the stage, helping students connect their artwork to the season and see everyday objects in a new way.

Created with 1st through 4th grade in mind, this project works beautifully in classrooms, homeschools, or even as a fall sub plan. The included step-by-step visuals, reflection activities, and rubric make it easy to guide students through the process, while the finished artworks become a striking seasonal display full of energy and personality.

Autumn is one of the most inspiring times of the year to create art. Bringing these natural elements into the art room not only sparks creativity but also helps students feel more connected to the season.
