Christmas Santa Art Project for Kids with Printable Art Lesson Plans
Kids get pretty excited as the days inch closer to Christmas so to help them explore art making but keep them engaged, I will provide you with a simple yet effective Christmas Santa art lesson to get students exploring art making mediums with simple strategies to create an art project featuring a Santa Claus. Read on to find the steps for creating and the full art lesson and downloadable PDF lesson plan and worksheets.
Materials and Hook for the Art Lesson
For this art lesson, you will need two art mediums and two pieces of paper. First, you need Wax Crayons and Watercolor paints OR Tempera Paint Cakes. As well, you will need white paper and a choice colored piece of paper. One paper is for the background and you can use any color you want for it, and one is for creating Santa.
Begin the lesson with hooking your students on the lesson. You can click here and follow the full video art lesson and create an example to show your students or you can start off with a classroom discussion and ask them a question: “What do you think of when you think of Christmas?” “What do you think the meaning of Christmas is?” “What different celebrations occur in December in different cultures?” Record all their answers on chart paper or on the board.
Next, you can explain you will be creating an artwork of Santa Claus!
Step 1: Draw Santa’s Face
Start the artwork by drawing the fluff on Santa’s hat with two ears and a nose below. Use a black wax crayon or black colored pencil. Model drawing it large or show them the full video art lesson that you can watch by clicking here.
Step 2: Create the face.
Draw a Santa face. Add eyes and fluffy eyebrows and a beard using your wavy lines.
Step 3: Add facial details and a Hat
Add more facial details like a smile and other choice things. Add the start of Santa’s hat.
Step 4: Add Santa’s body
Finally, add the fluffy pompom onto Santa’s hat and add his body.
Once you’re done, you can color Santa with wax crayons and paint for some fun resist painting effects. Do the same with choice imagery on a second piece of colored paper. When Santa is dry, cut him out and add him to the background for some fun Christmas Santa art for kids.
