Back to School Art Lesson Idea: Glue Bottle Line Art with Felt Marker Painting
Back to school season is officially here, and I don’t know about you, but I absolutely LOVE starting the year with a creative back to school art lesson that sets the tone for an inspiring and fun classroom. One of my favorite ways to do this? A Glue Bottle Line Art Project that’s perfect for introducing your students to the Elements of Art: Line and Color while letting their personalities shine.
This project is so simple to prep (which is exactly what we all need during the chaos of setting up classrooms), but it’s packed with creativity. And the best part? The finished artworks make THE most gorgeous back-to-school bulletin board display—imagine rows of vibrant glue bottles covered in zen doodles and felt marker painting. It’s the kind of display that makes parents stop in the hallway during Meet the Teacher Night and say, “Wow!”
Why This Project is Perfect for the First Week of School
You know those first few days where you’re learning names, setting expectations, and trying to build that classroom community vibe? This project fits in perfectly. It gives students a chance to:
- Explore line and pattern with doodles and designs
- Experiment with felt marker painting techniques (using markers to create bold, painterly strokes on thick paper)
- Express their identity in a creative and low-stress way
- Practice focus and mindfulness as they fill their glue bottle designs with unique patterns
Plus, it’s completely adaptable. I’ve done this with Grades 2-6, and you can scale up the complexity of the patterns or keep it simple for younger artists.

Materials You’ll Need
Nothing fancy here—this one uses materials you probably already have on hand:
- Thick paper or cardstock (so the felt marker “painting” doesn’t bleed through)
- Pencils and erasers for sketching
- Black fine tip markers or Sharpies for outlining
- Felt markers (Crayola Broad Tip or similar work perfectly!)
That’s it! No need to worry about paint spills in the first week of school.
How It Works
Here’s how I run this in my classroom:
- Hook Them In: I start with a quick discussion about school supplies. “What’s one school supply you couldn’t live without?” Then I show them a few pictures of glue bottles—different styles, colors, and even vintage ones to get their imaginations going.
- Sketching the Glue Bottle: Students draw their own glue bottle in pencil on thick paper. I encourage them to make it large and fill most of the page so they’ll have plenty of space for line patterns.
- Zen Doodle Designs: Inside their glue bottle, students fill each section with different line patterns—zig-zags, spirals, dots, stripes, checkerboards… whatever they like! This part is incredibly relaxing and helps students settle into the new school year.
- Felt Marker Painting: Once the doodles are complete, students use felt markers to fill the background and glue bottle label with color. I show them how to layer and blend colors slightly by overlapping strokes—this makes the colors POP like paint.
- Optional Literacy Extension: Older students can write a short reflection or artist statement about their design choices: “What do the patterns in your glue bottle say about you? How does color impact the mood of your artwork?”
Why Felt Marker Painting?
Felt marker painting is such an underrated technique. It’s mess-free (hello, first week of school!) but gives students the chance to experiment with color blending and layering in a painterly way. When you use markers on thicker paper, you can build up bold, vibrant colors without worrying about wrinkling.

Display Ideas for Your Classroom
This is one of those projects that practically begs to be displayed. Try:
- A “Stick With Creativity” themed bulletin board with all the glue bottles
- Hanging them on a clothesline across your room for an instant art gallery vibe
- Pairing the artworks with student artist statements for Meet the Teacher Night
It’s such a fun and colorful way to introduce families to the creativity that will flow in your classroom all year long.
Why Teachers Love This Project
This project isn’t just beautiful—it’s also a teacher favorite because:
- It’s low prep (we’re all busy in August and September!)
- It teaches key art concepts like line, pattern, and color
- It works for a variety of age groups and ability levels
- It’s perfect as a sub plan if you get pulled into meetings unexpectedly
- It doubles as a classroom community builder and mindfulness activity
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for an easy, engaging, and impactful art project to kick off your school year, this Glue Bottle Line Art lesson checks all the boxes. It’s creative, colorful, and full of opportunities for students to express themselves. Plus, you’ll end up with a gorgeous bulletin board that makes your room feel instantly welcoming.
So grab your markers, some thick paper, and let your students doodle their way into a fantastic school year. You’ll be amazed at how relaxing and inspiring this simple project can be—for them AND for you.
