What is the Element of Art, Value?

Value is one of the seven Elements of Art and deals with the lightness and darkness of a color.

Value is useful in creating highlights and shadows in a work of art to create the illusion of depth. Value creates variety in your artwork and can help create contrast to guide a viewer’s eye to a focal point.

According to Wikipedia, Value refers “to the degree of perceivable lightness of tones within an image.[2] The element of value is compatible with the term luminosity, and can be “measured in various units designating electromagnetic radiation“.[7] The difference in values is often called contrast, and references the lightest (white) and darkest (black) tones of a work of art, with an infinite number of grey variants in between.[7] While it is most relative to the greyscale, though, it is also exemplified within coloured images.[3]” (Wikipedia)

Monster Drawing Step-by-Step

First, use your pencil or favorite drawing art medium to draw a monster in the center of your page. Copy the one in this picture, or draw your own.

Next, use a pencil and draw circles around your monster to create the templates for where you will shade the different values.

Next, use a black medium such as a crayon or pencil crayon to shade the circles from light to dark black. The lighter you press, the lighter the value. The harder you press, the darker the value.

Last, color in your monster with your favorite colors and art mediums!
