Decade Selfie!

Have your students draw what they think they will look like at the end of this decade! New decades are always fun and so is New Years. So pass out some paper and prompt your students to explore a variety of choice mediums and materials and ask them to draw a self portrait of them at the end of this decade! You might need to explain what a decade is. If you are working with younger students, explain to them how old they’ll be at the end of the decade. Next, do a whole class brainstorm on your board about what they might look like at the end of the decade to help students all get ideas forming in their minds. After you exhaust your conversation, pass out the paper and a variety of mediums, put on some cool tunes, and let them draw! Remember to be encouraging to let their confidence bloom!

Draw New Year’s Goals

Instead of writing your New Year’s goals as usual, DRAW them! Use this as an opportunity to explore and experiment and use multiple mediums and materials. Set out a variety of mediums and materials in table centers or tubs and ask students to use AT LEAST 3 different mediums or materials in their illustration. Next, let the kids direct the art piece! Ask them to draw 2-3 goals for the New Year. What do they want to accomplish? What do they hope to do? You can even do a whole classroom discussion or brainstorm before the begin. Once their ideas are flowing and they have either talked in a whole classroom discussion or to their table groups/partners, then pass out the papers and let them draw!
