Start the new decade off with an artastic art project in your classroom! Have your students create New Year 2020 Zen Doodle Art Projects. Not only will this get your students engaged in the first days back in class (which no one will be excited for), but it will also get them exploring both marker, paint, and the Element of Art: Line and the Principle of Design: Emphasis. Let’s get started!

Begin your art piece by sketching the year “2020” across your page, LIGHTLY, with pencil. These will be guidelines for your letters. Print neatly. You can also try placing the letters horizontally, vertically, on a diagonal, or at different heights!

Trace around your pencil lettering with stylized, thick numbers. Write your 2020 using the pencil lines as your guidelines to help you draw your number around it.

Fill in each number with different lines and patterns such as zigzag lines, swirling lines, or whatever you can think of!

Draw a boarder around your numbers that’s about a finger width thick. Add dashed lines around the border with your marker.

Add a curling swash beneath your numbers on the page to add more texture to your graphic-styled design,

Paint both your numbers and background around the border with tempera paint cakes or watercolor paints (as they will let the marker show through. If you don’t want to use paint, you can easily use any coloring medium such as: crayons, pencil crayons, felt markers, or soft pastel. The goal always is to do what feels best as the artist, to experiment, and be creative!
As well, try adding your own spin onto things! See where it takes you!
